The Holy House of Loretto refers to the house where the Virgin Mary was born and lived in Nazareth. It was there that the Archangel Gabriel appeared to tell Mary that she would become the mother of Christ. In the 13th century, her home was lifted from its foundation and flown by angels to its current location in Loreto, Italy. The house in enshrined in the Basilica della Santa Casa and contains a statue of Our Lady made of Lebanon cedar. The house is the first shrine dedicated to Our Lady and is under the authority of the Pope. In 1920, Pope Benedict XV designated the Blessed Virgin as Our Lady of Loreto.
