Born in 7th century Ireland, Dymphna was the beautiful daughter of a grief-stricken pagan Irish warlord. When his wife, her mother, died, he searched the world for a maiden as fair. He realized that his daughter was as beautiful and made advances on her. She fled her home with her priest, Father Gerebernus, and settled in Geel in present day Belgium. Upon being found by her father, both Father Gerebernus and Dymphna were killed by his madness. Both of the victims were made saints, and the site of Dymphna's death is known for many miracles, including healing the mentally ill and those with neurological disorders.
