Carlton Gallegos, Santa Ana Pueblo

As a rancher from Santa Ana Pueblo, Carlton learned the craft of wheat straw appliqué from some of the only elders in the Pueblo who still remembered the art.  Straw appliqué was a traditional art of Spanish colonialists who appreciated the shiny, gold color.  As gold metal was hard to come by, crosses and other religious objects were painted a deep black or indigo and decorated with wheat that had been ironed into flat, golden pieces.  The art in the American Southwest was almost lost until revived in the 1930's.  Carlton is proud to preserve and continue the tradition.
