GonzagaSaint Aloysius Gonzaga Jewelry and Collectables

St. Aloysius de Gonzaga (1568-1591) was from a wealthy, very prominent family in Italy. He was prepared to be a soldier by his father and served at the courts of many nobles, but he longed to be a missionary. He was leery of women and would not be alone with one, including his mother. At the age of eighteen, he signed away any rights of inheritance (as first born son, Aloysius was heir to the family lands and titles) and became a member of the Jesuit Order. Even though Saint Aloysius was greatly affected by the distasteful physical ailments of the sick, he tended to many plague victims. As he was a very sickly child, his elders assigned him to a hospital that did not accept contagious diseases. It didn't work. Saint Aloysius contracted and died of the plague on the very day he had predicted after having received the information in a vision. As he died young, St. Aloysius is the patron saint of teenagers. Because he faced an incurable disease dignity and courage, he is Patron of AIDS patients and their caregivers.

Feast Day:  June 21
