Saint Bernadette

Saint Bernadette Jewelry and Collectables

Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879) was the eldest child in a large, poor family. In February of 1858, in Lourdes, France, Bernadette witnessed her first vision of the Virgin Mary in a cave-like grotto, describing it as a "small, young lady". She received seventeen more in the next six months, culminating in the "holy fortnight" at which time Bernadette received daily visions. Her visions focused on the need for prayer and pennance. At one point, Bernadette was asked to bathe in and drink the dirty water from the grotto as an act of pennance. The next day, water ran clear. Saint Bernadette asked that a chapel be built on the site (there are now several). Since the visions of Our Lady to Bernadette, millions of people have visited Lourdes. St. Bernadette's body is said to be internally incorupt and is in a gold and crystal requilary at the mother house in Nevers.
